Ohio traffic law targets young-driver risks

New rules aim to cut distractions, deaths

Ohio’s 16-year-old drivers will be limited to only one nonrelated passenger and face other restrictions under a new state law that goes into effect April 3.

The law also extends the prohibition against early morning driving by 16-year-old Ohioans to between midnight and 6 a.m. from the current 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. Exemptions for work, official school functions, and emergencies will continue.In addition, back-seat passengers ages 4 to 15 in all vehicles will now be required to ride with seat belts or booster-seat restraints. Currently, only back-seat passengers ages 3 and under must be restrained.
